Machinery that can be manipulated by thought alone has long been the realm of science fiction. Long before Neo asked the question “what is the Matrix?,” there was Blade Runner, Neuromancer, Max Headroom, Johnny Mnemonic and the CyberPunk and Shadowrun RPGs. Well, the fiction part is rapidly drifting away. Check out this Newsweek article.
Neuroscientists at Brown University have developed a device with 100 electrodes that connect with the motor cortex of the brain. Test subjects have been able to use the device to control a prosthetic limb, a wheelchair and a computer. Miniaturization still needs to occur before the device can be implanted in the human brain, but the developers of this technology believe this step is only a few years away.
Get ready to jack in, folks.
