I’ve wanted to post about this family before, but I couldn’t really say anything because of confidentiality issues. Now, however, they’re holding a benefit and the details of their tragedy have been made public. I want to do my part to call attention to their plight.

The Howards have two children, patients of my colleague Dr. Tosi. Cali is 9 years old, and Cody is 15. A month or two ago In April, the Howards brought their daughter Cali in to see Dr. Tosi because of a painful lump on her leg. It turned out to be a Ewing’s sarcoma – bone cancer. Cali was referred to St. Jude and began chemotherapy. Then, on July 1st, Cody was struck by a car while riding his bicycle. He sustained serious injuries requiring intensive care.

On July 27, from 4 to 8 P.M., a benefit will be held at the Casey’s on Route 29 (I’m assuming it’s the location at 1800 N. 8th Street, but I’ll clarify – there are other Casey’s on or near Route 29). According to the flier, there will be “Sponge Bob, cotton candy, face painting, car wash, DJ, dunk tank, Locks of Love, pizza specials and much more fun for everyone.” All proceeds go to benefit the Howards.

For those wanting to contribute more, donations can be made payable to National City.

Addendum (7/21/07): The Times now has an article on the Howards and their upcoming benefit.

Addendum (7/23/07): The Times also mentions the Howards in a board editorial.
