Culture of Ethical Failure

A “culture of ethical failure” pervades the Bush administration. This time those words were used to describe the atmosphere at the Interior Department, where the departmental inspector general, Earl E. Devaney, recently reported astonishing levels of corruption. A section of the department in charge of collecting oil & gas royalties indulged in a regular orgy of perks including golf outings, tickets to sporting events & concerts, and even illegal drugs and sexual activity with representatives of the energy industry.

Do you think John “Drill here, drill now” McCain and Sarah “I love the Bridge to Nowhere” Palin are going to change this culture of corruption? The whole idea that these two are pork-fighters and scions of ethical governance is complete hogwash … window dressing not at all backed up by the facts. It is … dare I say it? … lipstick on a pig!

I have no insight regarding corruption McCain vs. Obama, but on spending, actions speak louder than words. McCain has a history of keeping on budget, and of trying more earnestly than most other politicians to reduce federal spending. He supports amending the US Constitution to require an annual balanced federal budget. Based on past history, I don’t think he’s as likely as President Bush to promise a reduced government, and end up with a bloated one. That’s a big plus in my book.

I’m quite intrigued by the recent revelations that McCain may have also thrown his weight around to keep Ms. McCain out of trouble with the DEA. Nothing about the Bush administration and/or anyone associated with it surprises me anymore.

My thoughts exactly, time for a change.
