Shinseki Named US Secretary of Veterans Affairs

On the 67th anniversary of Pearl Harbor, President-Elect Barack Obama named General Eric Shinseki as his selection for United States Secretary of Veterans Affairs.

For those who have forgotten, the Bush administration dishonorably railroaded this decorated veteran out of the service in 2003 because of his very correct analysis that the pacification of Iraq would require far more troops than the Bushies planned to put in the field.

Poetic justice, IMO … and probably a bit of a one-finger salute to Donald Rumsfeld and the disastrous Bush legacy.

Change Has Come to America

If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.

Itâ€™s the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen; by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the very first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different; that their voice could be that difference.

Itâ€™s the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Latino, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled â€“ Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been a collection of Red States and Blue States: we are, and always will be, the United States of America.

McCain Promises Shangri-La

One of the main criticisms I’ve heard from Republicans (and Clintonistas, for that matter) regarding Barack Obama is that he offers charisma and flowery rhetoric but little in the way of substance. His world-view is naive, and the change he offers is overflowing with hyperbole. That’s complete bull in my opinion, but the argument carries weight with some folks.

To those critics I offer this political ad from the John McCain campaign for comparison:

IMO, Dobbus Bombasticus needs to retire his large elitist, racist, & xenophobic butt to his 300 acre ranch in Sussex County, New Jersey (91st wealthiest out of 3141 counties in America).Â I’m tired of this pretentious blowhard acting like he’s some “man of the people.”

Coronation Interrupted: Obama Victorious in Iowa

… and Hillary placed third. The inevitable coronation of Mrs. President Clinton seems to have faltered. We shall see what the rest of the primary season brings us.

As an Obama supporter, I must say that I’m quite pleased with the results.
