Growing up it was almost a perfect place to live. Beautiful parks,lakes,just a very "Mayberry" type town. I attended PCHS and was a dragon, so I was never technically a "Chink", but I did hang out at the "Chink Rink" and my mom and dad were "chinks". Most people do not understand where the name came from. Pekin was named after Peking China. The term "Chink" at that time was used as a nod to asians. Think about it. When a school picks it's name and mascot it picks a name that represents something, whether it be power, strenghth or whatever. It certainly wouldn't choose a name that is deragatory towards the students and players. The students were called "Chinks" and they were proud to be them. It was never an intended to insult anyone. It was a term of endearment to the city that we were named after. People are so politically correct nowadays. Words are words. A word can only hurt you if you let it. Who defined the word Chink as a "bad word"? Who says? Is there a panel that sits around somewhere and tells us what is acceptable and what is not? Why is the work "shit" a bad word? Crap and poop aren't and they all mean the same thing. Who said crap and poop were acceptable and the word "shit" was the bad one. It is all a little ridiculous don't you think? As I said words are words and what you think it means isn't always what I think it does. Pekin was a great place, and I am not ashamed to have lived there. Yes there is racism there, but no more than every other city and town in the United States. We need to let go of all of our guilt. White people are always going the extra mile to prove that they are not racist. You are, I am, we all are to a certain extent. These same people on here that are acting so high and mighty, would soil themselves if they ran into a black man in a dark alley. The same probably think that all asians know karate and all mexicans like tacos. Who is the ignorant one now? In closing I want us all to think about ourselves and what we believe.
